Each fourth grade class will be performing a dance the students have been working on with Mrs. Green in music class. The All Join In Assembly will be from 8:40-9:10 on Monday, October 5. Please feel free to come and see your child perform if you are available. I apologize for the late notice - September got away from us! Time has passed much quicker than we realized.
What We Have Been Doing:
We are really beginning to settle into our literacy routine. Students are now choosing the activity they wish to participate in during Daily Five time. I continue to meet with students to discuss strategies to help them improve as both readers and writers.
In Math, we have begun to switch groups between the 2 classrooms. We are currently working on place value. Students should continue to work on fact fluency. Attached is a sign up sheet for Xtramath.org. Students are using this program in the classroom to practice fact fluency. We are reviewing addition and subtraction facts to be sure they are strong as we will be adding and subtracting large numbers in our place value unit. Xtramath is a free program that provides me with reports of how students are performing. The enrollment form will allow you to have your child also practice fluency using Xtramath at home. This is not mandatory! However, once you enroll, I believe you can also see your child’s reports as well. There is an app option that costs $4.99 but the program will work just fine, for free, from a web browser. I can not stress enough how helpful it is for students to have facts memorized as we move into more complicated math concepts. Please consider using this program as another way to motivate children to practice this skill.
We are continuing to learn about the nervous system and this week we simulated an experiment to learn what some sections of the brain control. Specifically we learned about the motor cortex, touch cortex, hearing cortex, and visual cortex.
Reminder: Book it has begun. Any student who meets his/her reading goal each week for the entire month will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This program will run from October through March. Each certificate is valid for 1 month from the date it is issued. I have sent home recording forms for students who are unable to log reading in Learn2earn at home.
Friday Folders (envelopes really…) should be signed and returned every Monday morning.
Boomerang folders should go back and forth EVERY day.
Assignment books should be signed each night to show that you were made aware of what your child had for homework.
