Just a reminder...If you are interested in ordering from the November or December book order forms - they were due today! I can extend it to Wednesday but that is far as I can go if the books are to make it back in time for the break.
Beginning with this week’s homework packet you will find a vocabulary packet. The packet will include definitions of our new words, as well as a packet of work for students to complete.
We will be working on the same vocabulary words for a period of two weeks. The first week students will receive a page of guided notes for their vocabulary words. We’ll use this notes page to work together to define our new words and practice with them. That same Friday, vocabulary pages will go home for homework, which will be due the following Friday. The second week, another page of vocabulary work on the same words will go home. at the end of the two week period students will be assessed on the words. For now Mrs. Maguire-Jones and I plan to assign eight words for each two week period. Five of the words will be “tier two” words (sophisticated language that allows us to be more precise. For example small would be a tier one word while miniscule, petite, minute or diminutive would be tier two words.) students have encountered, nominated, and voted on. The other three words are words we will choose either based upon content or upon word parts we want to introduce. Please see the guided notes and vocabulary packets attached to this week’s homework packet to gain a better understanding of our words and how the vocabulary process will work in our class.
When possible, utilize our vocabulary words (both past and current) in daily conversations with your children. Not only will this help students to learn the words for our upcoming test, repeated use of the words will also help them to truly “own” the words and therefore make them a part of their personal vocabulary. As an added bonus, when students read, hear, or use the word appropriately in a sentence, they add a popcorn kernel to our canning jar. Once we have filled the jar to the one cup mark, we will celebrate as a class.
